AI Subscription vs API: where the money actually goes
Whether a Claude or ChatGPT subscription beats paying per token comes down to how much you send, and the answer flips well inside the range of normal use. Below is the break-even point for four workload profiles, computed from API prices this site re-checks daily, plus subscription prices read from the vendors’ own billing endpoints.

Regional arbitrage is roughly zero
Read country by country from Anthropic's billing endpoint, every region lands near $20 for Pro once converted. Cheaper-country subscriptions are largely a myth for Claude.
Break-even points by workload
Each cell is the number of turns per day at which that subscription costs the same as sending the same work to the comparable model’s API. Send fewer turns than the number and the API is cheaper; send more and the subscription is. The four profiles differ only in how large a turn is, which is what moves the answer.

Claude (including Claude Code)
Anthropic states its limits as relative multiples: Pro is 1x, Max 5x and Max 20x are five and twenty times Pro. No tier has a published token quota, so this site does not convert one.

OpenAI states Pro 5x and Pro 20x as usage multiples of Plus. No token quota is published, so this site does not convert one. Website prices are absent here because the ChatGPT pricing page exposes no structured billing endpoint to read, so only App Store prices are listed.

Break-even is the number of turns per day, at the turn size you entered, where the API bill equals the subscription price. Below that number pay-as-you-go is cheaper; above it the subscription is. That holds only if the subscription’s rate limits carry your load, which is a separate question covered below. API unit prices are read live from this site’s price library, re-checked daily.
What this comparison cannot tell you
Price is only half the decision. A subscription that wins on cost can still fail you if its rate limits stop your work, and neither vendor publishes the token allowance behind a tier, so nobody can compute how much headroom you are buying. The honest reading of the table is that it settles the money question and leaves the capacity question open.
Questions
How many tokens does a subscription include?
Neither vendor publishes that. Anthropic and OpenAI both describe their limits as relative multiples (Pro 1x, Max 5x, Max 20x) and have never put a token quota on any tier. Any page telling you a subscription equals N tokens made the number up. This page asks a different question that can actually be answered: price your usage at API rates, then compare it to the subscription price. Both sides of that comparison are published figures.
If the subscription works out cheaper, should I just buy it?
Not necessarily. Subscriptions carry rate limits, and hitting one means waiting or being throttled, while the API will bill you for as much as you send. So a cheaper subscription tells you the price is favourable, not that the allowance covers your work. Heavy users often keep a subscription for the baseline and send overflow to the API.
Can I save money by subscribing from a cheaper country?
For Claude, essentially no. We read Anthropic's own billing endpoint country by country: Canada CAD 28 is about $20, Singapore SGD 27.52 is about $21, the UK £15 including tax is about $19, Germany €18 before tax is about $19.6, and Japan, the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia are billed in USD 20 directly. Every one of them lands near $20, so there is no regional arbitrage to speak of. The two levers that do work are annual billing and which store you buy from.
Does it matter whether I subscribe on the website or in the App Store?
For Claude it matters a lot. Max 5x is $100 on the website and $124.99 in the App Store; Max 20x is $200 versus $249.99. Apple's cut is passed through to the sticker price, 25% on both tiers. It is not a universal rule though: ChatGPT is the same price on both channels in Japan, Taiwan, Germany and Canada, and in the Philippines the App Store is actually cheaper. Check both before you subscribe.
Why does the break-even point move so much between workloads?
Because API cost scales with tokens, not with messages. A short question and a long agentic coding turn that re-reads several files can differ by more than an order of magnitude in tokens, so the same subscription price buys very different numbers of turns. That is why the table below reports a separate break-even for each workload profile instead of one headline number.
